6. Fume Hoods Selection

Fume hoods selection:

The fume hoods shall be selected and their installation sites shall be determined during the laboratory construction.The types,material and shape of fume hoods shall be selected according to experimental contents.


Drugs used:

Enough consideration shall be given to the wind speed and heat source control during experiments using organics or other special reagents.When using equipment with heat source,ventilation quantity for heat discharge shall be calculated when the heat exceeds 2,000 kcal/h.thus the power of ventilator determined.


Experiments involving radioactive substances or perchloric acid:

They demand special fume hoods with the inlet air velocity of higher than 0.5m/s.The application of large equipment shall consider the effective internal size to reserve enough spaces for air exhaust.


Material:

Experiments involving special acids shall pay enough attention on the materials of fume hoods.For example,semiconductor industry and corrosion industry must apply fume hoods made from anti-corrosion materials.


Size:

The size of fume hoods shall be determined according to the experimental contents as too big will result in waste and too small will influence their application.


Environmental protection:

Harmful gas emission that exceeds national hygiene standard but must be lower than national environmental protection level requires installation of corresponding purification plant.


Energy saving:

Adequate considerations shall be given to energy saving.Fume hoods with air supplement or air capacity control are good choices for heating or air-conditioned rooms. The power of ventilator shall be determined according to the need instead of increasing air low and pressure blindly.

Frequency converter or wind velocity varying fan can be used to lower energy consumption.

The fume hoods shouldn't face road and places people passing through frequently.They shall be free from window blocking and places with poor ventilation and lighting.They can' t stand in the way of entrance and exit.They shouldn't be put in opposition and at wall corners.
